Abstract

The article addresses legal, theoretical and practical issues of participation of an authorized interpreter in criminal proceedings. Based on the analysis of international and national legal sources the author of the articl studies the legal standing of an interpreter, the requirements for the level of their professional competence and its role in the observance and implementation of the rights of the suspect and the accused in a fair trial. An interpreter plays an important role in the enforcement and protection of the rights and freedoms of persons who do not know the language of the proceedings in the criminal case. The article covers topical issues of international laws, the impact of the European Court of Human Rights on the transformation of the legal mechanism of protection of the rights of the suspect and the accused not speaking the language of the proceedings, and discloses the role of the court interpreter.
